The new film will be a direct sequel to the 2015 Minions standalone film "Minions". As a spin-off of "Despicable Me", it tells the story of the Minions serving other masters in the "pre-Gru" era, but the young Gru once appeared in this spin-off film, and the sequel will revolve around his relationship with the Minions.
