Plot:
The film consists of three short films - "Magic (Less Real Than Magic)", "The Open Door" and "One More Time". The multiplicity and mirroring of female characters are themes in Hamaguchi's previous works, and they are also themes in his new work "Chance and Imagination". The previous works "Happy Hour" and "Night and Day" have the flavor of novels in a literal sense, while "Chance and Imagination" can be said to be a collection of short stories. The narrative rhythm strengthens this impression: three episodes, each episode revolves around a female character, and is divided into three acts. The three short films tell the story of an unexpected love triangle, an unsuccessful seduction and a meeting due to misunderstanding. Although fragmented, the organic narrative flow is maintained and even emphasized. Although most of the action takes place in one space and only two actors are involved, the film does not feel like a chamber drama. This is not only due to the dialogue, but also to its complex concept of time and space, which almost becomes a science fiction in the last episode. The moments we witness are all connected to a touching universal fate, marked by choices, regrets, deceptions and coincidences, which are the real protagonists of the film.
