The story is adapted from a true event. It tells the story of a transgender man named JT Le Roy who became famous as a writer in 1999. Later it was revealed that his image was actually fabricated: the so-called book he wrote was actually written by a woman named Laura Albert (played by Dunn), and the image he appeared in front of the public was played by a woman named Savannah Knoop (played by Stewart).
