The film is based on Ian McEwan's novel of the same name. It tells the story of Stephen Lewis, a writer of children's literature who was originally living a happy life. Because of the disappearance of his daughter, he lived a negative life and became increasingly distant from his wife. It was not until the birth of their second child that the estrangement between the couple was gradually resolved.
