Plot:
This film is adapted from Milan Kundera's novel of the same name. In 1968, Prague surgeon Thomas (Daniel Day-Lewis) lived in the joy of chasing women and enjoying the pleasure of sex. Painter Sabina (Lena Olin) was Thomas' confidante, but during a visit to the spa, Thomas met waitress Theresa (Juliette Binoche). Soon, Theresa came to Prague alone and the two got married. After marriage, Thomas still did not change his bad habit of having affairs with Sabina or other women. Theresa could not stand Thomas's infidelity and ran away late at night, but encountered the Soviet armed invasion of Czechoslovakia. The three fled to Geneva, Switzerland one after another. Sabina met Franz (Derek de Lint), a local university professor. Theresa lost her job and was depressed all day long. She returned to Prague alone with her dog Karenin. How should Thomas choose between freedom and bondage? This film was one of the top ten films in the United States in 1988, and was nominated for the 1989 Oscar for Best Cinematography and Best Adapted Screenplay, the Golden Globe Award for Best Drama and Best Supporting Actress (Lena Olin), and won the British Film and Television Association Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, the American Film Critics Association Award for Best Director and Best Picture.
