Vietnam was a French colony in 1929. A 15-year-old French girl (Jane March) was studying at a boarding school for girls in Saigon. She went home every holiday. Her mother ran a very small school with little income. She had two older brothers. The eldest brother, Bill, was addicted to drugs and was domineering.
