Homer Wells (Tobey Maguire) grew up in an orphanage in St. Clouds, where the director of the orphanage, Dr. Wilbur Larch (Michael Caine), took great care of him. Homer grew up healthily and happily with other orphans. He also studied with Dr. Larch and mastered superb medical skills, especially gynecological surgery. One day, Lieutenant Wally Worthington (Paul Rudd) brought his fiancée Candy Kendall (Charlize Theron) to the orphanage for an abortion. After the operation, Homer asked Wally if he could take him to the outside world to see, and Wally readily agreed.
