The story takes place in the late Qing Dynasty. In the vast forest of Liaohe River outside the Great Wall, three poor men, Suo Zhiyi (played by Tian Xiaojie), Gu Renyi (played by Zhang Xilin) and Tang Ziyi (played by Huang Haibo), carved their names on the tree trunks. They knocked their heads together and became sworn brothers. Tang Ziyi tried to catch Du Sanqiang, a famous bandit in Liaohe River, for a reward of 500 taels of silver, but was kidnapped by him. Tang He's beloved rich lady Ye Yushan (played by Tong Lei) was plotted against during his escape. He escaped with injuries and was eventually taken care of by Liu Suya (played by Chen Lina) and her daughter. In order to save Yushan's reputation, the eldest brother Suo Zhiyi married her in a fake marriage and resolutely raised Ziyi's son.
