Mathias (Kevin Kline) inherited his father's house. He came to Paris and wanted to sell the house to make up for his financial difficulties. However, when he came to his house, he was faced with two strange women-Matilde (Maggie Smith) and her daughter Chloe (Kristin Scott Thomas). It turned out that the two were tenants of their father before his death. According to the law, if Mathias insisted on selling the property, he would have to pay rent to Mathilde on a monthly basis.
