Song Shijie (played by Stephen Chow) is a famous lawyer in the Qing Dynasty. His outstanding eloquence and ability allowed him to criticize the officials of the government and to seek justice for many people. Even though he was dissatisfied with the corruption and darkness of the officialdom at that time, he still accepted a lot of bribes, some of which were unscrupulous money, and all of them were retribution on his sons. More than a dozen sons could not be raised. For the sake of the child in her belly, his wife (played by Anita Mui) flatly asked him to stop writing and not to be a lawyer anymore. Although Song Shijie was extremely reluctant, he agreed to his wife's request. His wife met a widow (played by Wu Jiali) who was full of grievances.
