It tells the story of a mixed-race girl named Bell who was adopted by an aristocratic family and influenced the abolition of slavery. The heroine Bell is the illegitimate daughter of British naval captain John Lindsay and a Caribbean slave. She was later adopted by her father's uncle Lord Murray.
