Plot:
Borg/McEnroe tells the story of the epic 1980 Wimbledon final between Swedish tennis legend Bjorn Borg (Sverrir Gudnason) and young American star John McEnroe (Shia). The two men's personalities and temperaments are very different: one is a perfect example of calm, even cold, while the other is a volcano of fiery inner emotions. But they have one thing in common: they are both top players in the field of tennis. With immersive and outstanding performances from Sverrir Gudnason, Shia and Stellan Skarsgård, this sports film has the potential of a psychological thriller. Danish director Janus Metz (whose 2010 Cannes Grand Prix-winning "Armadillo" was also shortlisted for TIFF that year) recreates the classic 1980 Borg-McEnroe Wimbledon final in this film, while also showing the surrounding media frenzy and the personal anxiety experienced by the two players and their respective teams. By 1980, Borg had won four Wimbledon titles. He was 24, admired by the world, rich, and engaged. But contrary to his cool public image, he had suffered from anxiety all his life. His opponent was McEnroe from New York. McEnroe was a magician on the tennis court, a whirlwind of anger and perfection. The media and the public loved to disparage and hate McEnroe because of his explosive temper, which could explode at any time on the court, accompanied by foul language directed at the referee and/or the spectators. But McEnroe also suffered from mental anguish. In the greatest match in tennis history, two players will stand on the court and face each other with their superb skills and inner demons. Between tense match scenes and evocative flashbacks, Borg/McEnroe will make us excited not only about the beauty of the game brought by top players, but also about the part that resonates with us - the price of success.
