The film is adapted from the short film of the same name. Shinobu Terajima plays Setsuko, a no longer young, lonely, and smoking Tokyo working woman. In order to change the status quo, she enrolls in an English course at the suggestion of her niece Mika. John, an English teacher from the United States, asks Setsuko to wear a golden wig and gives her an English name, Lucy. After Setsuko transforms into Lucy, her personality becomes more cheerful and she gradually falls in love with John. One day, John suddenly disappears. After Setsuko learns that John and Mika are in love and elope to California, she decides to come to the suburbs of Southern California to find the two for love. Setsuko tries her best to realize the American dream of "Lucy", while also experiencing the test of family and past events.
