This film is adapted from the experience of chess prodigy Fiona Mutasi. Fiona was born in Katwe, the largest slum in Uganda. The local church provided rice porridge to those who came to learn chess. Fiona entered the chess class for this purpose. She was extremely talented and her chess skills improved. She eventually represented her country on the international chess stage.
