Successful writer and scholar Jonathan Merrick falls for the irresistibly beautiful Ligeia, who is battling illness and death. She steals the souls of others in order to achieve immortality. She tricks Jonathan into becoming her assistant and instigates him to divorce her. Jonathan eventually descends into darkness and madness.
