In 1947, Chiang Kai-shek brazenly tore up the peace agreement and launched a full-scale civil war against the liberated areas. Zhang Lingfu led the ace main force to reorganize the 74th Division from Huainan to Huaibei, and attacked Lianshui City for the second time. After a bloody battle for twelve days and nights, the army commander Shen Zhenxin led his troops to break through and fled to Maicheng. Zhang Lingfu won successive victories, conquered Huaiyin, Suxian, and Linyi, and fought from northern Jiangsu to southern Shandong, and occupied our bases in northern Jiangsu and southern Shandong. He threatened to solve the Shandong issue within three months and capture Chen Yi and Su Yu alive. In this situation where the enemy is strong and we are weak, Mao Zedong made strategic decisions in Yan'an, merged the Shandong Field Army with the Central China Field Army, formed the East China Field Army, concentrated troops to fight north and south, and eliminated Chiang Kai-shek's vitality. In order to completely wipe out the Shandong Liberation Army in one fell swoop, Chiang Kai-shek mobilized more than 200,000 troops of Tang Enbo Corps with Zhang Lingfu's 74th Division as the vanguard to advance from south to north. He also ordered Li Xianzhou Corps in Jinan to push from north to south to Laiwu and Xintai, attempting to attack our army from north to south. Chen Su decided to leave Shen Zhenxin's troops to block the southern line, and the large force encircled and annihilated Li Xianzhou's troops, and the famous Laiwu Battle began. 50,000 enemy troops in Laiwu attempted to break out in the direction of Tusikou. Shen Zhenxin led his troops to capture Tusikou, cut off the enemy's retreat, and completely wiped out Li Xianzhou Corps. Unwilling to fail, Chiang's army took Zhang Lingfu as the vanguard and attacked Mengyin County, Shandong, in an attempt to annihilate our Huaye in the Yimeng Mountain area. Chen and Su had the courage to take the head of a general in a million-strong army and encircled and annihilated the 74th Division. However, Zhang Lingfu, regardless of his life or death, occupied Menglianggu, trying to kill our army with the tactics of "blooming in the center and encircling the four walls". The two armies of 720,000 people fought fiercely in the small Menglianggu mountain area for three days and three nights, with blood flowing like a river and corpses everywhere. Finally, Shen Zhenxin's troops climbed up the cliffs with human ladders, captured the main front of Menglianggu, and directly attacked the cave of Zhang Lingfu's headquarters. Zhang Lingfu fought stubbornly and was determined to die for his country, but was shot dead by our army. It was a classic battle that shook the world. The power comparison between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party was huge, but the success and failure were reversed in an instant.
