Plot:
In October 1979, South Korean President Park Chung-hee was shot dead by Kim Jae-gyu, the head of the Central Intelligence Agency of South Korea. This triggered Chun Doo-hwan's military coup, which then developed into the most turbulent period in South Korea. The MBC TV drama "The Fifth Republic" is about the assassination of President Park and the military coup launched by Chun Doo-hwan that led to the resignation of the 10th President Choi Kyu-ha. The drama also involves the power struggle between the Democratic Party and the military government, and tells the little-known behind-the-scenes story of Chun Doo-hwan's establishment of the Fifth Republic government, the opening of the 1988 Seoul Olympics, and the 13th President Roh Tae-woo who was later elected by direct elections.
